The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), as well as the Academy of Radiology Research, invite to you the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus on Friday, April 25th, 2014 in Bethesda, MD to preview cutting-edge technology and research supported by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). During your visit, you will meet with NIBIB Director Dr. Roderic Pettigrew and watch demonstrations from leading scientific experts on the latest advances in the field, including:
• Dr. P. Hunter Peckham of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH will showcase his work on neuroprosthesis to restore hand grasp in persons with complete paralysis.
• Dr. Mehmet Toner of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, MA will present his work on a microfluidic device that can detect tumors before they spread and determine quickly if treatment is working.
• Dr. David Erikson of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY will explain his device that one-day may be able to diagnose Kaposi sarcoma – a type of cancer – in minutes using a smartphone.
• Dr. Maysam Ghovanloo of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA will showcase his new technology that helps paralyzed individuals control a wheelchair, smartphone, or computer using a tongue-operated device.
• Dorothee Heisenberg of Clear Guide Medical in Baltimore, MD will demonstrate an image-guided system that provides real-time guidance to doctors during procedures.
• Hari Shroff of NIBIB Intramural Research Program in Bethesda, MD will showcase two first-of-a-kind microscopes that were developed to understand brain development by observing real-time migration of cells.
NIBIB strives to improve health by leading the development and accelerating the application of biomedical tools and technologies that can see inside the body without being invasive, make diagnoses at the time of examination, help precisely guide and monitor the delivery of therapies, and improve our understanding of disease.
Please join us for this wonderful opportunity to meet with NIBIB Director Dr. Pettigrew and see first-hand the advances in medical technology made possible by NIH support. The event will be held from 9AM to Noon, with boxed lunches and transportation provided.
RSVP to Sarah Mandell, Director of Research and Programming at AIMBE (smandell@aimbe.org), to reserve your space.
