UM System president appoints C. Mauli Agrawal as new chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City

University of Missouri System President Mun Choi announced today that C. Mauli Agrawal, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), has been appointed chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, effective June 20, 2018.

“I’m thrilled that Dr. Agrawal has agreed to serve as the next chancellor of UMKC, and I’m confident that the university will reach new heights of success in research, education and outreach through his leadership,” Choi said. “UMKC has an outstanding team of administrators, faculty, staff and alumni supporters who will work closely with him to achieve our collective vision.”

World renowned scientific society honors UTSA’s Mauli Agrawal

C. Mauli Agrawal, UTSA interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, has been named a fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His election by his peers recognizes his “distinguished contributions to the fields of orthopedic and cardiovascular biomaterials and implants, with significant impact on biomedical sciences and improving healthcare outcomes.”
Agrawal will be formally inducted at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston on Feb. 18, 2017.

A mechanical engineer by training, Agrawal’s research specializes in the area of orthopedic and cardiovascular biomaterials/implants, with primary interests in tissue engineering and drug delivery. He is widely cited for his innovative work is creating scaffolds embedded within implants to promote cell and tissue regeneration and for his current contributions related to the use of biodegradable materials in cardiovascular stents and orthopedic implants.

His research has led to 29 patents and more than 315 scientific papers.

Among numerous accolades, Agrawal has received the Julio Palmaz Award for Innovations in Healthcare and the Biosciences, the Service Award from the Society for Biomaterials, the Chancellor’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Award from the University of Texas System, and the Healthcare Hero Award from the San Antonio Business Journal. He has been inducted as a fellow to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering. UTSA’s C. Mauli Agrawal Awarded for Service in Biomaterials Field

C. Mauli Agrawal, the David and Jennifer Spencer Distinguished Chair for the Dean of Engineering and Peter Flawn Professor in Biomedical Engineering at UTSA, has been selected as the sole recipient of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) 2013 Award for Service.

The award honors his significant service to the SFB in establishing, developing, maintaining and promoting its objectives and goals and the field of biomaterials. He will be recognized at the society’s annual meeting in Boston, Mass., April 10-13.

"It is truly an honor to receive this international recognition," said Agrawal. "I was fortunate to enter the field of biomaterials when some of the pioneers who changed the practice of medicine through revolutionary implants were still active. I have been privileged to learn from them and pass on the tradition to younger generations. This has made my 25 years in the field very fulfilling."

UTSA Alumna, Advisers Launch Cardiovate to Prevent Aortic Aneurysm Ruptures

University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) alumna Jordan Kaufmann, Ph.D.; UTSA College of Engineering Dean Mauli Agrawal; and UT Medicine San Antonio cardiologist Steven Bailey, M.D., have launched Cardiovate, a technology start-up that will offer a new and much-needed cardiovascular stent-graft to prevent aneurysm leakage following cardiovascular surgeries.

Kaufmann, an alumna of the UTSA College of Engineering’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, developed the stent-graft as part of her doctoral research with UTSA’s Agrawal and Bailey, division chief for cardiology in the School of Medicine of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.

C. Mauli Agrawal, the UTSA David and Jennifer Spencer Distinguished Chair for the Dean of Engineering and Peter Flawn Professor in Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed to a second two-year term on the advisory board of the Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF). Agrawal’s new term will expire Aug. 31, 2012.

"At the recommendation of Governor Rick Perry, the Texas Emerging Technology Fund was established in 2005 by the Texas Legislature to strengthen the state’s economy by providing $200 million in funding to support promising technology start-up companies in Texas and promote innovation by recruiting outstanding scientists to Texas’ universities," said Agrawal. "This is a very exciting time for Texas, and I am honored to serve on the fund’s advisory board for a second term."

Engineering Dean C. Mauli Agrawal Receives Palmaz Award from BioMed SA

C. Mauli Agrawal, David and Jennifer Spencer Distinguished Chair for the Dean of Engineering and Peter Flawn Professor in Biomedical Engineering, was selected by BioMed SA, a local bioscience development organization, to receive the fifth annual Julio Palmaz Award for Innovation in Health Care and the Biosciences.

Named after Palmaz stent inventor Julio Palmaz, the award honors one American each year who has made significant and lasting contributions to advance the bioscience and health care industries. Agrawal will receive the award at a Sept. 16 dinner ceremony.

"The Palmaz Award is indeed a great honor," said Agrawal. "I am truly humbled by this recognition especially given that past recipients include giants such as Julio Palmaz and Dean Kamen whose work has touched millions of lives."
