AIMBE Science Communication & Public Engagement Workshop
October 23, 2025 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
AIMBE is excited to invite you to join us for a virtual science communication workshop led by Karl Leif Bates, Science Journalist and Former Executive Director of Research Communications. This introductory science session will overview essential science communication skills, with a focus on common challenges, effective strategies, and dos and don’ts. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how to apply these skills across various public engagement avenues, including commentary writing (e.g., Op-Eds), media interviews, short videos for social media, and more. This session will also include actionable tips and guidance for growth, along with examples of tailoring your message for different audiences (e.g., supporters versus skeptics of science).
Karl Leif Bates has over 30 years’ experience writing about science and medicine for the public and leading communication workshops for thousands of STEM faculty and trainees at the University of Michigan and Duke University, as well as the EPA, NASA, CIFAR, and Burroughs Wellcome Fund. He also coaches biotechnology startups and faculty on investor and donor pitches, has won national awards for journalism and university relations, and is a Fellow of AAAS.
