Summary
In an oxygen-pinching technique developed and refined on a model-driven, oxygen-consuming Human Patient Simulator, the patient or a caregiver manually interrupts oxygen flow from a cylinder during exhalation by pinching the oxygen tubing with pliers. Simulated oxygen saturation (SpO2) improved from 87% at room air to above 95% while decreasing oxygen usage by up to 60% compared to continuous oxygen flow.
Description
We simulated a hypothetical acute oxygen shortage in a low resource environment encountering disruption in international air transportation where it would help if a finite source of oxygen such as an oxygen cylinder can be made to last as long as possible… Continue reading.
...WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has announced the induction of Samsun Lampotang, Ph.D., FSSH, Joachim S. Gravenstein Professor of Anesthesiology, University of Florida, Director, Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies, University of Florida, to its College of Fellows.
Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to a medical and biological engineer. The College of Fellows is comprised of the top two percent of medical and biological engineers. College membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering and medicine research, practice, or education” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education.”
Dr. Lampotang was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for “technology innovations in simulation in healthcare and patient care that address health disparities, patient safety and return on investment.“
