Today James M. Anderson adds another honor to an already impressive list: membership in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The recognition comes a decade after Anderson won election to the Institute of Medicine, five years after he won election to the Association of American Physicians, and a year after he won election to the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. It also comes 19 days after he won the 2013 Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal from the American Physical Society.

“Jim’s entire career embodies interdisciplinary excellence,” President Barbara R. Snyder said. “His willingness to span boundaries and engage broadly with collaborators has contributed to significant breakthroughs for patients. He deserves every bit of acclaim he has received—and more.”

The 2013 Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal has been awarded to Dr. James M. Anderson. The award recognizes undisputed world leaders who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in biomaterials, including basic science and translation to practice.

Often, collaboration helps turn a great idea into a life-changing invention, or a minor project into a major breakthrough. But for James M. Anderson, collaboration is what’s defined his career.

As a professor of pathology, macromolecular science and biomedical engineering, Anderson’s 44 years at Case Western Reserve have included research, teaching and service that bridges medicine and engineering. In addition, he has been instrumental in developing cooperative efforts between the School of Medicine and Case School of Engineering—as well as among other universities.

These shared endeavors have earned him many awards and honors—including, most recently, Distinguished University Professor, a title that will be conferred upon him during fall convocation on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 4:30 p.m. in Severance Hall.

Four School of Medicine faculty members have been named Fellows of the prestigious American Association of for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). They are: Jerry Silver PhD, professor of neurosciences; James M. Anderson, professor of pathology, macromolecular science, and biomedical engineering, and a pathologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center; Qing K. Wang, PhD, professor of molecular medicine for the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University (CCLCM), professor of genetics and director of the Center for Cardiovascular Genetics, Cleveland Clinic; Thomas Alan Hamilton, PhD, CCLCM professor in molecular medicine and professor of pathology; and Pierluigi Gambetti, MD, professor of pathology and neurology and director of the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center at Case Western Reserve. The faculty members were honored on February 19th in Washington, D.C. at the annual meeting for the AAAS.
